Public Reserve Lands
Some of the most wild and remote settings for camping in Maine can be found at Public Reserved Lands (PRL). Camping is allowed at most of the 29 land units that range in size from 500 to more than 43,000 acres.
Campers should be prepared and have experience for a rugged wilderness outing, as public reserved lands are not staffed like state parks. In these untouched areas campers will see rare plants and abundant wildlife, and have an authentic backcountry recreation experience.
Land units set around mountains are destinations for camping and hiking, while other locations feature primitive oceanfront tent sites or remote waterways for canoeing, kayaking or fishing. Camping is free on most lands, but there is a use fee for a handful of the units.
All Public Reserved Lands provide a true get-away-from-it-all setting where quiet and seclusion are your welcome companions.
