Maine Snowmobiling: All trails lead to fun

Snowmobile in front of a covered bridge

With more than 13,000 miles of snowmobile trails, sledders can enjoy Maine’s winter scenery in any part of the state. Maine’s Interconnected Trail System (ITS) stretches from the town of Lebanon in the south to Jackman in the west, Calais in the east, Madawaska in the north and hundreds of points in between.

The groomed trails are maintained by dedicated snowmobile clubs, the Department of Conservation and municipalities, and many pass by general stores, restaurants, inns and sporting camps to meet the needs of users. Snowmobiling in Maine can mean a leisurely ride on a cleared trail through forest or around a lake, or an open throttled dash across snow-covered fields or a pond.

Guided snowmobile tours are offered by outfitters and sled rentals are available. Information about snowmobile rules and registration is online at http://www.maine.gov/ifw/rv/snowlaws.htm.
