More Than Apples at Maine's Orchards
2011 Fall
September is the month when Maine orchards open for apple picking. But, you'll find a lot more than fresh McIntosh, Cortland, Honeycrisp and Golden Delicious or already picked apples, cider and pie at orchards around the state. Many businesses also offer fresh peaches, pears, crabapples, honey, blueberries or raspberries. You can take home jams and jellies, breads, doughnuts and other pastries along with apple pie. Orchards also grow pumpkins and gourds of all shapes and sizes. And the whole family can enjoy activities like corn mazes, tractor and horsedrawn wagon rides or open barnyards to meet cows, goats, sheep, chickens and other animals.
