Locals helped Bethel build two world record-tall snowpeople. Now, the town has called on professional snow sculptors to add to its annual WinterFest happening January 9-19.
Two life-size bears in a motor boat pulling another bear on water skis, and a moose driving an ATV between two pine trees will be among the sculptures inside a 140-foot long refrigerated tent on the Bethel common. Members from the winning team at the 2008 Quebec Winter Carnival International Snow Sculpting Competition and the Maine Snow & Ice Sculpting Foundation will create whimsical snow statues based on the theme “Four Seasons of Outdoor Fun”. Sculpting demonstrations will be offered, and visitors can make their own snowperson. Other festival activities include ice skating, sledding, snow shoeing, Nordic skiing and horse-drawn sleigh rides. Many town shops and restaurants will have specials and be open extended hours on weekends during the event.
