With 5,500 magical miles of coastline, it’s no surprise that Maine has an abundant maritime heritage that should be celebrated. While it might be a bit too chilly to go sailing during a Maine winter, there is no better time to learn all about the state’s rich maritime history by heading to the Maine Maritime Museum.

Maine’s maritime history is retold each day at the Bath museum through exploration of a working shipyard, boat building workshops, or through a simple tour of the museum’s many exhibits. Landlubbers can check out the many varieties of boats that have been a part of Maine’s marine past, crack open a sailor’s sea chest, learn about lobster trapping, delight in stories of the high seas, and practice all of your maritime lingo, mate.

Located on the banks of the Kennebec River and just south of the esteemed Bath Iron Works, the museum welcomes more than 65,000 visitors of all ages each year. The museum is open each day from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., except for Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day and New Year’s Day.
