From Retail to Relaxation: Freeport’s Shopping and Outdoor Fun

Freeport, Maine is tucked between two state parks and hosts more than 120 stores and specialty shops, making it the perfect blend of adventure and refinement – and a unique Maine shopping experience. Much of that shopping is clustered in Freeport’s compact downtown, so you can park, stroll and shop. You might even want to leave your car at home and hop Amtrak’s Downeaster, a train that carries passengers from as far south as Boston directly to the downtown shopping district.

The town has many popular retailers, including a number of outlets. Peruse stores including Brooks Brothers, Calvin Klein, Coach, CorningWare and Corelle, G.H. Bass and Co., Sperry Top-Sider and more. Freeport is the birthplace of outdoor clothing and gear giant, L.L.Bean, with stores including its headquarters and outlet.

Looking for Maine-made products? Check out accessories from Sea Bags; blankets from Maine Woolens; chocolates from Wilbur’s of Maine; crafts and jewelry from Abacus Gallery; and Cold River Vodka and other potato-made spirits from Maine Distilleries.

Shopping makes for hungry people. The Broad Arrow Tavern at the Harraseeket Inn and the Maine Beer Company tasting room are among the many spots in Freeport to grab a bite. Rather picnic? Grab some fresh bread from When Pigs Fly and some gourmet items from Bow Street Market and head over to Wolfe’s Neck Woods State Park in coastal Freeport or Bradbury Mountain State Park in the neighboring town of Pownal.

For more outdoor experiences, consider one of L.L.Bean’s Outdoor Discovery Programs, which offer classes in snowshoeing, outdoor fitness and yoga, cross-country skiing, kayaking, outdoor photography, fly fishing and more. Or visit Wolfe’s Neck Center for Agriculture & the Environment, a coastal farm and education center on the environment.
