Aroostook County

Maine’s largest and northernmost county, Aroostook is home to a diverse mix of cultures and communities, settled in a region with strong agrarian roots amidst vast unspoiled wilderness, including the 92-mile chain of ponds, lakes and rivers that form the Allagash Wilderness Waterway. In the St. John Valley towns of Fort Kent, Madawaska and Van Buren, the region’s French-Acadian history and culture come alive. Summer brings the Acadian Festival to Madawaska and the Ploye Festival to Fort Kent; and in August 2014, the region will host the Acadian World Congress. Summer also heralds the Midsommer Celebration in New Sweden, the Maine Potato Blossom Festival in Fort Fairfield, and the Crown of Maine Balloon Fest in Presque Isle. Adventurers can canoe the Northern Forest Canoe Trail as it winds its way into Canada, or in winter, snowmobile on more than 2,000 miles of groomed trails.
