Greater Portland & Casco Bay
The communities surrounding Casco Bay abound with arts and culture, fabulous restaurants and unlimited recreational opportunities. Portland’s Arts District is the place to be on the first Friday of every month, when people are out and about enjoying live music, galleries, shops and museums, including the outstanding Portland Museum of Art. The city lives up to its reputation as “America’s foodiest small town” (Bon Appetit) and was named one of America’s Dozen Distinctive Destinations by the National Trust for Historic Preservation. Professional stage companies, a symphony orchestra, chamber ensembles, numerous performing arts venues, film and music festivals all attract audiences to the region, and there’s always something exciting going on: from the Old Port Festival to the Yarmouth Clam Festival, from the Portland Chamber Music Festival to the L.L.Bean Free Summer Concert Series and free concerts in Monument Square.
And Portland is the birthplace of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow.
