Theater
Attending a theatrical performance in Maine is a treat. Not only is the state rich in talent, but also in spectacular venues. Here you can catch big names and up-and-comers in performances that run the gamut from summer stock to Broadway caliber.
Maine talent includes both home-grown and summer rusticators. Patrick Dempsey (a.k.a. Dr. Dreamy), Judd Nelson, and Linda Lavin are natives; Glenn Close is a transplant; John Travolta and Kirstie Alley summer here; and numerous stars vacation in Maine. Fritz Grobe and Steve Voltz earned fame when their Diet Coke and Mentos video went viral. World-famous mime Tony Montanaro taught physical theater here for 30 years. Current theater companies range from talented amateurs to Equity professionals; touring productions come from throughout the world.
The quality of the talent is one reason to take in a show, another is the magic of experiencing a performance in a renovated historical theater, such as Rockland's Strand, Biddeford's City Theater, Portland’s Merrill Auditorium, Deertrees in Harrison, The Grand in Ellsworth, The Bangor Opera House, and Center Theater in Dover Foxcroft, or in a spectacular setting. Summer stock theaters can be found dotting the coast, edging inland lakes, and amidst forested hills.
Classics, musicals and comedies are performed statewide, and you might even catch the premier of the next big Broadway show during Bangor's Penobscot Theatre's annual New Play festival, Northern Writes. Throughout the state, community troupes present works year round. And then there's physical theater. Get this: There likely are more jugglers per capita in South Paris and Buckfield than anywhere else worldwide.
