Kennebec & Moose River Valleys

Famous for its whitewater rafting and snowmobiling, this region also boasts nationally known museums, Shakespearean theater, and an international heritage trail. Travel Route 201 through the Kennebec-Chaudière Corridor, tracing early trading routes through historic riverfront towns, from Hallowell (antique central) to Skowhegan. Along the shores of Lake Messalonskee in Sidney is New England Music Camp where you might catch a free Sunday concert in the historic Bowl in the Pines. Stop in at the Center for Maine Craft in Gardiner on the way to Maine’s capital city Augusta, where you can visit the Maine State Museum and the 18th century Old Fort Western. In Waterville, you’ll find an outstanding collection of American art at the Colby College Museum of Art and in Solon, discover the amazing frescoes inside historic South Solon Meeting House. Also located in Skowhegan is the world-renowned Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture––check out their summer lecture series. From there, explore the Old Canada Road National Scenic Byway to the outdoor recreational hub of Jackman, home of the Northeast Championship Sled Dog Race.
