Agricultural Fairs
When the last bale of hay is stacked in the barn and most of the garden is harvested, it's time to celebrate the bounty of Maine's summer and kick off fall with an agricultural fair.
From July to October, 26 communities in Maine open their fairgrounds for a variety of family activities. At Maine fairs, everyone is welcome to cheer on their favorite teams - which could include horses, oxen or tractors. Watch hard-working 4-H participants compete in exhibits and livestock shows or, better yet, jump into the action yourself by participating in a pig or calf scramble. Close your eyes and savor the delicious smells of sausage, cotton candy, fried dough and fair fries – just be sure to go whirling on the midway rides before you start sampling the food.
Test your skills at one of the carnival and arcade games, watch parades and fireworks, and get your strategy ready for harness racing. Be sure to bring your dancing shoes for the musical entertainment. From prize-winning handmade crafts to the largest-pumpkin competitions, fairs in Maine offer fun for everyone in your family.
