Containing over 542,000 acres of state and national parks with thousands of miles of public trails; Maine offers outdoor photography enthusiasts state-wide opportunities to capture wildlife images.

Travel along the winding trails of Maine with your camera at the ready or you may miss the family of foxes romping near their den. Continue onward as the tree canopy opens to reveal hidden ponds where moose feed and painted turtles rest on downed tree limbs.

A telephoto lens will help you capture images of black bear and the elusive lynx; while a fast shutter speed is sure to capture white-tailed deer bounding through the meadows. 

Use the Maine Birding Trail Guide to find habitat for the photogenic  ruby-throated hummingbird, warblers, and great horned owls.

In Maine, the opportunities to capture wildlife photos do not stop at lands end but continue along our 5,500 miles of coastline. Adventurers are treated to a variety of wildlife watching cruises offering thrilling views of breeching humpback whales, porpoises, and puffins.

Maine also boasts the 375-mile long Maine Island Trail that weaves along the coast and offers photographers shots of nesting eagles, sea birds, and harbor seals. 

Many outfitters and Registered Maine Guides offer trips for photographers to see specific wildlife in all seasons.

For a unique photographic opportunity, contact the Maine Wildlife Park in Gray about a Photographer’s Admission Pass. Pass holders are escorted into the park and granted special access into the park’s wildlife enclosures to take up-close pictures unimpeded by fences or other obstacles.

Park Photographer’s Passes are available by prior reservation only.

Summer Photographer’s Passes – for use from April through November - are $50 per hour. Winter Photographer’s Passes – for use from December through March - are $150 for the first hour and $50 for each additional hour
