Wildlife Refuges

Maine has nine national wildlife refuges owned by the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, and other refuges maintained by local Audubon Society chapters and towns. Refuges range in size from dozens to thousands of acres, and protect coastal, river and mountain habitat for rare and common migrating birds, and native animals like moose, fox, white-tailed deer, beavers, owls, osprey and bald eagles.

Refuges have some of the best undiscovered walking and hiking trails in the state. From ocean islands to inland forests and 2,000-foot mountain peaks, trails lead visitors to scenic views and untouched landscapes.
