All Terrain Excitement
If you are an ATV enthusiast looking for challenging trail rides, back country exploring, or easy terrain with beautiful views, Maine has it all.
A very ATV-friendly destination, the state offers more than 5,000 miles of trails and some of the best scenic riding in the East. From mountains, thick forests, water vistas, and open meadows ideal for wildlife spotting, an ATV trek through Maine can be as stunning as it is exhilarating.
The farther north you travel in Maine, the better the riding gets. In fact, more than half of the state’s ATV trails are located in its three northernmost regions—Aroostook County, the Maine Highlands, and Maine’s Lakes and Mountains. The rugged, wilderness terrain stretches on for miles and an extensive system of ATV-accessible trails winds through vast, untouched areas.
If you don’t have your own machine or you are interested in connecting with a group to ride with, you can easily find an outfitter that will hook you up with a rental or guided tour. If you’re looking to stay and ride or embark on a multi-day excursion, there are also plenty of camps, lodges, and outdoor adventure-oriented resorts that cater to ATV vacationers.
Much of the state’s extensive trail system has been made possible through the generosity of private landowners who allow ATV riders to use their land and the network of local clubs that maintain the trails.
In addition to these privately-maintained trails, other exciting riding opportunities can be found within Maine’s Public Reserved Lands, more than half a million acres of wilderness that have been set aside for wildlife, timber, and recreational use. There are also a number of abandoned rail beds maintained by the state that provide great riding for ATVers as well as horseback riders, mountain bikers and other outdoor adventure-seekers.
To find out where to ride, contact the Maine ATV Program at (207) 287-4957 and ask for a trail map. Please remember that to legally ride Maine trails, you will need a Maine registration for your ATV. Register your ATV online.
Here’s an update for all ATV explorers: Maine is now in the process of establishing a statewide interconnecting ATV trail system, so opportunities for off-road fun will continue to grow. Stay tuned!
