Roque Bluffs State Park Beach

The dramatic coastal landscape of Roque Bluffs State Park features 274 acres of bold cliffs, cobble beaches and more than a mile of oceanfront on Schoppee Point. Visible offshore is the historic Libby Lighthouse, built in 1817 and still an active beacon. The half-mile long pebbly crescent of Roque Bluffs Beach is the main attraction, offering beach goers lots of room to play and recline in the sun when not swimming in the brisk ocean waters of Englishman Bay. Just across the park road is Simpson Pond, with its own beach and much warmer freshwater swimming.

Along the park road between the beaches are picnic areas with tables and grills, restrooms, parking (accessible) and a playground for the kids. There is no running or potable water available in the park, so visitors are advised to bring their own supply for drinking, cooking and washing.

A number of trails wind through the inland area of the park, traversing the fragrant balsam woods, old orchards and open fields on their way to Pond Cove and Great Cove. In all, more than three miles and several hours of pleasant hiking are possible. Bald eagles are seen year round and bird watchers will enjoy the great variety of waterfowl and other birdlife that frequent the park. 

Explore the pond and ocean shoreline by paddling a kayak or canoe. Ocean-bound paddlers can launch their crafts from Rogue Bluff Beach, while motor boats can use the trailered launch at the end of Schoppee Point Road. Kayaks may be rented on-site for use on Simpson Pond. Anglers can fish the pond for stocked brown and brook trout. 

The town of Machias, on Route 1 eight miles to the north, has a range of services, shops and restaurants.  It’s also the home of the annual Wild Blueberry Festival. The Art Gallery at the University of Maine at Machias displays an impressive collection of contemporary American artists work in a variety of media. The Burnham Tavern Museum tells the story of the first naval battle of the American Revolution, fought in Machias Bay in 1775. At Fort O’Brien State Historic Site visitors will learn why this spot is considered to be the birthplace of the American Navy. Take a puffin cruise to Machias Seal Island to see colonies of the colorful sea birds.

Roque Bluffs State Park is open year round.
