East End Beach

East End Beach, the City of Portland’s only public beach, is a haven for summer visitors and urban dwellers alike. The sand and pebble beach stretches for a several hundred yards along the edge of the Eastern Promenade and offers room to relax, sunbathe and swim. Sailboats bob on their moorings in the protected waters of Casco Bay, and offshore, Peaks, Great Diamond and Long Islands beckon.

Ample parking is nearby just uphill from the boat launch, where there are public toilets and changing areas. Benches and picnic tables line the scenic route of the Eastern Prom Trail above the beach. Dogs are not allowed on the beach in summer season. Kayaks and canoes can be launched from the beach or the boat ramp for exploration of Mackworth Island or Fort Gorges, each just a short paddle away. The grassy hillside of the promenade provides yet more space to walk and enjoy the view.

From East End Beach, walkers can connect with the Portland Trails system and miles of urban greenways. The Harborwalk Trail is an easy walking route to the Old Port, Portland's historic waterfront district, and its unique mix of shops, restaurants and entertainment options. Just uptown, visit the Portland Museum of Art, Maine’s oldest and largest art museum, for the current exhibition and permanent collection of fine and decorative artwork. Take in a professional baseball game at Hadlock Field and watch the Portland Sea Dogs, a minor league affiliate of the Boston Red Sox, play ball.
