Ferry Beach / Western Beach
The west side of Prouts Neck in Scarborough is home to two white sand beaches, Ferry Beach and Western Beach. Together the beaches stretch for nearly a mile near the mouth of the Scarborough River and the Scarborough Marsh Wildlife Management Area. Western Beach has a gentle slope to the water and is ideal for wading and beachcombing. Relax in the sun, swim, play, and enjoy the views of Pine Point across the river channel and the long ribbon of sand extending for many miles along Saco Bay, to Old Orchard Beach and beyond.
Parking is available not far from the beach. Amenities include public restrooms, showers for rinsing off, and a snack cart that sells treats and cold drinks. Dogs are not allowed on the beach from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. There is a boat launch at the north end of Ferry Beach.
Make a visit to nearby Portland Head Light, an iconic coastal Maine landmark, which guards the sea lane to Portland Harbor. Adjacent Fort Willams Park has picnic tables and grills, walking trails, a pocket beach and numerous old fort structures to explore. At the Scarborough Marsh Audubon Center take a guided or self-guided tour of Maine’s largest salt marsh on foot or by canoe to get a close-up view of its bountiful birdlife. The center also hosts natural history exhibits and a nature store, and has canoes for rent.
