Higgins Beach

Higgins Beach is a quaint oceanfront village in Scarborough that draws visitors and locals to its more than half a mile of white sand beach near the mouth of the Spurwink River. Sunbathers will enjoy spreading out a blanket, relaxing to the sounds of the sea and swimming in the relatively warm water here. Bodysurfers and board surfers can take to waves for an exciting ride on the breakers. Kayakers can play in the ocean surf and paddle up the scenic river just around the bend from the beach. Surfcasting for striped bass in season is also a popular activity.  

Parking for Higgins Beach is a short distance away on Ocean Avenue, where a fee is charged in summer. There are no facilities on the beach.

Make a visit to nearby Portland Head Light, an iconic coastal Maine landmark, which guards the sea lane to Portland Harbor. Adjacent Fort Willams Park has picnic tables and grills, walking trails, a pocket beach and numerous old fort structures to explore. At the Scarborough Marsh Audubon Center take a guided or self-guided tour of Maine’s largest salt marsh on foot or by canoe to get a close-up view of its bountiful birdlife. The center also hosts natural history exhibits and a nature store, and has canoes for rent.
