Dead River Public Reserved Land
This 4,771-acre preserve encompasses several miles of scenic Flagstaff Lake shoreline and the first few miles of the Dead River after it leaves the lake at Long Falls Dam. Take a refreshing swim in the clear lake waters, enjoy a lakeside picnic, revel in the mountain views and the balsam-scented air, and relax in this peaceful spot in the Maine woods. Fishing is a popular activity here, and there is a boat ramp for launching a canoe, kayak or motorboat. There are also picnic tables, outhouses and primitive camping near the dam. Additional campsites are found near the river at Big Eddy below Long Falls.
Take a walk into the Flagstaff Hut, a day use and overnight facility of the Maine Huts & Trails system on the shores of Flagstaff Lake with views of the Bigelow Mountains. The 36,000-acre Bigelow Preserve offers miles of hiking trails that lead to alpine peaks over 4,000 feet in elevation and spectacular views. Hike a few miles of the famous Appalachian Trail, which passes nearby on its 2,175-mile route from Mount Katahdin, Maine to Georgia. Visit the Stanley Museum in Kingfield to see steam-powered cars from the early 20th century. The Sugarloaf Antigravity Complex offers fun for the whole family, including indoor rock climbing, a skate park, running track, gymnasium and exercise equipment.
