Oakland Town Beach - Messalonskee

This quiet community beach, also known as Snow Pond Swim Area, is located at the northern end of 8-mile long Messalonskee Lake in the village of Oakland. There is small 100-foot pea gravel beach, refreshing swimming in the clear lake waters and an acre of lawn for relaxing in the sun with the family. Picnic tables and grills nearby are just right for a cookout. There is a playground to keep the kids entertained. Ample parking is available, as are portable restrooms and a boat launch. There are no lifeguards and no fee at the beach.

Explore the hiking trails of the 6,000-acre Kennebec Highlands and get away for a few enjoyable hours to the woods, hills and ponds of this picturesque conservation area. Take a walk on the Messalonskee Stream Trail, one of many fun recreation trails maintained by the Kennebec Messalonskee Trails group. The Colby Museum of Art has an excellent permanent collection of American art from the 18th through 21st centuries, as well as an active temporary exhibit program. Admission, gallery talks, lectures and receptions are free. Visit Fort Halifax on the Kennebec River in Winslow, a Massachusetts Bay Colony outpost built in 1754 and the oldest remaining blockhouse in the U.S.
