Pleasant Point Beach - McGrath Pond
This 30-acre community park at Pleasant Point Beach in Oakland offers plenty of space for summer recreating. The upper part of the park sports a ballfield for fun and games, while the lower part is a day use area that includes a small beach for swimming and room to spread out and relax in the sun with family and friends. Picnic tables and grills are available for cooking a delicious outdoor feast. There is a playground to keep the kids entertained. Ample parking is available, as are portable restrooms. There are no lifeguards and no fee at the beach.
Explore the hiking trails of the 6,000-acre Kennebec Highlands and get away for a few enjoyable hours to the woods, hills and ponds of this picturesque conservation area. Take a walk on the Messalonskee Stream Trail, one of many fun recreation trails maintained by the Kennebec Messalonskee Trails group. The Colby Museum of Art has an excellent permanent collection of American art from the 18th through 21st centuries, as well as an active temporary exhibit program. Admission, gallery talks, lectures and receptions are free. Visit Fort Halifax on the Kennebec River in Winslow, a Massachusetts Bay Colony outpost built in 1754 and the oldest remaining blockhouse in the U.S.
