Short Sands Beach

Short Sands is a sandy pocket beach tucked between rocky cliffs in the village of York Beach, not far from picturesque Nubble Light. The quarter mile of beach is just right for spreading out a blanket and chairs and taking it easy in the summer sun, when you’re not enjoying the wonderful swimming. Lifeguards are on duty during the peak summer months. A promenade walkway and Ellis Park are just above the beach and feature benches, a gazebo and shelter for rest and shade. There is also a basketball court and playground. Adjacent to the beach are gift shops, snack bars, restaurants, an arcade and bowling alley. There is metered parking in a municipal lot next to the beach, and restrooms and outside showers are available.

Hop on the trolley system of the Shoreline Explorer and take in the sights, shopping and restaurants along the coast from York Harbor to Kennebunkport. Nearby Cape Neddick (“Nubble”) Light has watched over the entrance to York Harbor since 1879; a good vantage point to view the light is from Sohier Park in York Beach, where there is free parking. The whole family will enjoy a visit to York’s Wild Kingdom, the largest zoo and amusement park in the area. Take a scenic drive up the auto road on Mt. Agamenticus for panoramic views of the southern Maine hills and coast.
