Peaks-Kenny State Park

The clear and deep waters of Sebec Lake stretch for ten beautiful miles beneath a backdrop of forested hills and mountains. Peaks-Kenny State Park encompasses 896 acres of this pretty country, including a mile of secluded lake shore. From the sandy beach nestled in South Cove visitors are treated to a spectacular view of Borestone Mountain, which rises dramatically across the lake. The swimming is delightful, and in the summer months, a lifeguard watches over beachgoers.

Canoeing is popular activity on Sebec Lake and rentals are available. Boaters can launch at Greeley’s Landing, a public ramp just two miles away at the terminus of Route 153. Anglers can try their luck fishing for lake trout and landlocked salmon.

A grassy picnic area with picnic tables and grills is just steps from the beach, and is perfect for relaxing after a delicious meal with family and friends. Restrooms and changing rooms are nearby. A covered shelter is available for groups, and a playground will keep the kids entertained when not splashing in the water. And plentiful parking is just a short walk away. Explore the park on more than five miles of delightful hiking trails, including the Birch Mountain Ledge Trail and the Browns Point Trail.

A campground offers 56 wooded sites for tenting, camper trailers and RVs. Each site has a picnic table and campfire ring for cooking and wood fires. Hot showers are available and there are restrooms with flush toilets and drinking water faucets at three locations in the campground.

The Blacksmith Shop Museum in Dover-Foxcroft houses an original forge, ox-lifter, anvil and other agricultural and rural tools. The Borestone Mountain Sanctuary, a 1600-acre preserve owned by Maine Audubon, has several miles of hiking trails, three ponds, old growth forest, a nature center and panoramic views from the craggy summit of Borestone Mountain. The remains of a blast furnace and charcoal kilns at Katahdin Iron Works are worth a visit. And Screw Auger Falls, one of the magnificent waterfalls in the slate canyons of Gulf Hagas , is a few miles away and reachable by a two-mile round trip hike. 

Peaks-Kenny State Park is open from May 15 to October 1.
