Hunnewell Beach - Popham Beach State Park

Popham Beach is situated on a small peninsula at the mouth of the Kennebec River where it flows into the Atlantic Ocean in Phippsburg. Three beach areas comprise what is popularly known as Popham Beach, offering plenty of room to roam and relax in the sun.

Popham Beach State Park is a 529-acre preserve featuring a mile of sandy beach, bathhouses, freshwater showers for rinsing off and a picnic area with charcoal grills. Spread out in the sun for a relaxing day and go for a swim in the waters off Morse Point. At low tide it’s a fun walk out to the Fox Islands offshore to explore the tidal pools, or stroll across the flats of the Morse River and search for seashells. Surfcasting for striped bass is also a popular activity at the beach.

Adjacent to the park is Hunnewell Beach, a mile-long stretch of sand extending east to the Kennebec River. And running northward along the river for an additional mile is Popham Beach. Both sandy beaches are accessible from points along Route 209. 

Fort Popham, a semicircular granite fort built during the Civil War that guards the mouth of the Kennebec River, is worth exploring. At the Bates-Morse Mountain Conservation Area, go for an easy hike over Morse Mountain to Seawall Beach and enjoy beachcombing amid the sounds of the surf and abundant bird life. Walk the narrow streets and enjoy the shops and restaurants of historic Bath, known as the City of Ships for its long maritime heritage.
