Bicycling
One of the best places from which to appreciate Maine’s spectacular natural landscapes is, without doubt, the seat of a bicycle. Bicycling opportunities abound in Maine from mountain biking down a ski trail, to leisurely pedaling along a country lane. Take a week-long guided bicycle tour of rural Maine or rent a bike and explore Acadia National Park with its 57 miles of carriage trails and the less-traveled roads of the Schoodic Peninsula. Pedal along the rocky coastline and enjoy a picnic lunch in the shadow of an historic lighthouse. Get off the beaten path on a secluded logging trail or a quiet coastal village lane. Board a ferry and spend the day riding around one of Maine's many islands in Casco or Penobscot Bays. Bicycle rentals are available throughout the state by the hour or by the day.
The League of American Bicyclists certainly agrees: in 2011, Maine became the second most bike-friendly state in the country after two years of being rated the third. The ranking is based on a League survey covering everything from state policies and programs to education and support for bike transportation. Throughout Maine, you’ll find well-maintained trails and bikeways, numerous bike outfitters and tour companies, and abundant opportunities to explore––on road or off.
From mountain biking down a ski trail, to pedaling the carriage roads of Acadia National Park to boarding a ferry for a day spent riding island roads, Maine’s abundant and varied cycling opportunities offer something for bikers of all ages an abilities. Be sure to check out the East Coast Greenway website, for information on a network of trails that will, one day, connect Maine to Florida.
Online resources to help you plan your Maine bike adventure include Explore Maine; the Bicycle Coalition of Maine; and TrailLink.com, which is powered by Rails-to-Trails Conservancy, and offers maps as well as rider reviews.
