Rangeley Lake

In the heart of Maine’s Lakes & Mountains Region is Rangeley Lake, considered to be one of the finest brook trout and landlocked salmon waters in Maine. While the majority of anglers target landlocked salmon right after ice-out in May through the end of June, a significant number of 4-pound plus brook trout have been recorded from Rangeley Lake throughout the summer and into the fall.

At 6,000 acres with a maximum depth of 149 feet, Rangeley Lake is enough water for any angler to explore. As with other brook trout and salmon lakes in Maine, anglers most often troll streamer flies or sewed-on smelt. It should be noted, however, that the use of live bait is prohibited on Rangeley Lake.

Anglers can expect to connect with landlocked salmon in the 4-6 pound range with larger fish possible. Brook trout typically range from 12 to18 inches.

The lake is surrounded by high mountains covered with fir and spruce trees with plenty of accessible shoreline. Boat launch facilities are located in downtown Rangeley, at the State Park on the south shore and on the northwest corner of the lake. The area is home to a number of Registered Maine Guides. In fact, Rangeley is home to the first registered Maine Guide, a woman, “Fly Rod” Crosby. Many of the camps that “sports” frequented in the days of “Fly Rod” Crosby are still operating. These historic sporting camps offer anglers a truly complete fishing experience.
