Whether you want to step back to the 19th century, or lodge in comforts of the 21st century, there’s a Maine fishing camp to suit your needs and fill your creel.

Among the oldest camps in Maine are Little Lyford Pond Camps and Medawisla Wilderness Camps — located near Gulf Hagas in the 100-mile wilderness; both owned and operated by the Appalachian Mountain Club.
Little Lyford is more than 100 years old and contains a wealth of hunting, fishing and logging history. Bob LeRoy, a registered Maine guide, says, “The remote wilderness area surrounding Little Lyford Pond Camps and Medawisla Wilderness Camps is a premier fly-fishing destination. You’re more likely to cross paths with a moose than another person.”
Another century-old outfitter is Bradford Camps, the only set of wilderness camps on the three-mile long Munsungan Lake at the headwaters of the Aroostook River. Fish include brook trout, landlocked salmon, lake trout, and rare blueback trout. “We are on a very remote lake in the middle of the North Maine Woods. There are no stocked fish,” said Igor Sikorsky, the owner of the camps.
Fish River Lodge on Eagle Lake is unusual in offering a school for registered Maine Guides. Here you can sometimes catch more than 30 landlocked salmon, lake trout and brook trout during your stay, many in the 3-pound range. (Check up-to-date fishing reports from the field to find current salmon, lake trout and brook trout catches.)

Downeast, you can enjoy Weatherby’s on Grand Lake Stream. It’s an Orvis-endorsed fly-fishing lodge with private instruction, fly fishing school, fly-tying clinics plus landlocked salmon, brook trout, lake trout, smallmouth bass and white perch.
“We have a diversity of fishing options and the high quality of our guides is what makes us unique,” says owner Jeff McEvoy.
Just around the corner on beautiful East Grand Lake is Rideouts Lakeside Lodge where the lodge dining room extends out over the water, allowing guests to enjoy panoramic views of the Canadian shoreline.
Northern Outdoors offers lodging, meals and campsites at the base of Mount Katahdin as well as the Forks. “We offer fully guided, multi-day fishing packages to some of the finest smallmouth bass fishing in Maine and the world,” said Russell Walters of Northern Outdoors. “We absolutely guarantee you’ll catch fish!”
If you are interested in a more refined stay on your fishing trip, check out Migis Lodge in South Casco on the shores of Sebago Lake, world famous for its landlocked salmon. “We have rustic elegance only two-and-a-half hour drive from Boston,” says owner Tim Porta. The resort offers a spa, sauna, massage therapy, tennis courts, fine dining and a private island.

The possibilities for great fishing experiences are endless. In the Millinocket area, Nahmakanta Lake Wilderness Camps offers a traditional fishing camp setting for trout and landlocked salmon in lakes and streams that feed into the lake.
Macannamac Camps, located in the Allagash Region with housekeeping camps on Haymock, Spider and Cliff Lakes, is in an area teeming with brook trout, whitefish and lake trout.
In the Rangeley Region, Grant’s Kennebago Camps is located nine miles behind a controlled gate and has private access to the largest fly-fishing only water east of the Mississippi.
It’s all up to you. Maine is one of the last places in the East where you can still enjoy wilderness fishing while sampling an endless menu of lodging and fishing experiences. Maine sporting and wilderness camps are magical places where the casts of a rod measure time and life passes at a much slower and peaceful pace.
