Private Golf Courses
Unlike other New England states where all the best courses are private, Maine offers great golf on many levels. Yet Maine does offer a handful of exceptional private golf courses that should not be missed if you get the opportunity to play them.
Some are actual private golf clubs that include numerous amenities in addition to 18 holes of grand golfing. You can find private, member-owned (equity) clubs offering recreational, athletic, and dining services for the social enjoyment of their members. If you are interested in membership but are not looking to “own” the course, private non-equity clubs are available, too.
Membership at one of Maine’s private golf clubs may also come with year-round tennis, indoor and outdoor swimming pools, complete fitness centers, and some delectable cuisine. Though few in number, Maine’s private golf courses serve up some challenging tees, as well as beautifully manicured greens. But don’t dismay: “Private” doesn’t necessarily mean inaccessible. Some private golf courses offer “trial memberships” and, for those just passing through, at least one of Maine’s private country clubs has a “Daily Fee Offer.” Try it–you’re sure to like it.
