Sea Kayaking
Maine’s 5,500 miles of geographically diverse coastline provides world-class opportunities for sea kayaking adventures – from the calm to the challenging – amid the rich maritime history, culture and unique natural beauty of our ocean shores.
Paddle the seas of Downeast Maine from Acadia east to the Bold Coast and enjoy scenes of rugged spruce and fir-studded headlands and steep cliffs of pink granite.
Explore the long, sheltered peninsulas and secluded islands of the mid-coast, from Penobscot Bay to Casco Bay, where many inland rivers flow to meet the sea. Enjoy the waters and waves along the sandy beaches of the southern coast from Portland to Kittery.
The 375-mile Maine Island Trail - America’s first water trail designed to protect the fragile coastal environment and provide an organized recreational route for sea kayakers – winds through the best of the Maine coast, with 180 designated islands and campsites, and makes a pleasant destination for a few hours, a day or a week or more.
Every ocean kayaking adventure offers the chance to breathe in the invigorating salty sea air and observe the striking scenes of nature all around you, as you paddle your kayak through the waves under your own physical power, one rhythmic stroke at a time. Your companions may include more than just your paddling partners; squawking gulls are ubiquitous, and seals, porpoises, ducks, ospreys and eagles are common sights.
Land your kayak on a remote island ledge or beach, have a hearty lunch, enjoy a swim, go beachcombing, or take a hike through the fragrant woods. Paddle into a working harbor, land your boat, and take in the sights and sounds of fishing boats plying the waters to and fro as you enjoy a dinner of fresh cooked lobster, corn-on-the-cob and chowder in a dockside restaurant.
Numerous outfitters provide complete sea kayak equipment rental packages, as well as instruction for paddlers from beginner to intermediate. Expertly guided tours range from a few hours to half and full day excursions to multi-day trips that include meals, instruction and camping on offshore islands. You can even arrange to stay at friendly and comfortable inns with meals, warm beds, and hot showers.
