Antiques & Collectibles

Ready for your own antiques road show? You've come to the right place. Maine's rich seafaring past combined with its favored state status for summer rusticators means you'll find plentiful antiques in Maine. Some towns, such as Wells, Wiscasset, Searsport, Hallowell, and Cornish, are renowned destinations for serious shoppers, but you'll find antiquing opportunities throughout the state, in historic downtown buildings, in rural barns, in former sea captain's mansions, and in renovated mills.

No matter whether you're searching for a rare first edition, an 18th-century sextant, a Chinese polychrome vase, or an antique fishing creel or log cabin quilt, you'll likely find it in one of Maine's specialty antiques shops. Time a visit to coincide with the oldest decorative arts and antique sale in the country, held annually in August at the Woodlawn Museum in Ellsworth, or another of the state's many antiques shows and fairs, or an auction, or an estate sale. The Maine Antique Dealers Association maintains an events calendar, and the renowned Maine Antiques Digest often lists other opportunities.

Antiquing in Maine is also about flea market and tag sale finds. Garage, barn, and lawn sales approach Saturday morning religion here. A mosey through antiques and collectibles stores, multi-dealer shops and trash-and-treasures barns often reward browsers with serendipitous finds that will make you a believer, too.
