Mall & Outlet Centers
When the need for an all-out shopping binge strikes, head to one of Maine's weatherproofed malls or to one of its renowned outlet centers. Maine's two largest indoor malls, the Maine Mall, in South Portland, and the Bangor Mall blend national retailers coupled with more localized stores all under one roof, making it easy to satisfy everyone in your shopping party with just one trip.
When it comes to finding bargains, Maine's outlet centers are the place to shop. Both Kittery and Freeport are internationally renowned, prized for the quality, quantity, and breadth of factory and outlet stores. You'll find all the big names, from Polo Ralph Lauren to J.Crew, Nine West to North Face, Black & Decker to Bose, but don't miss the smaller stores sandwiched in between the big names or on the side streets. Kittery is just over the bridge from Portsmouth, N.H., and only one hour from Boston. Its outlets are spread out in modern plazas flanking Route 1. Freeport's outlets are in a real Maine village just 20 minutes north of Portland. Freeport's draws include upscale Maine designer shops and L.L. Bean's summer concert series, demonstrations, and Walk-on-Adventures programs.
While Kittery and Freeport are outlet bonanzas, seek out other factory stores throughout the state for real deals, including the New Balance factory stores in Oxford and Skowhegan, L.L. Bean's other outlets in Ellsworth and Bangor, and the Old Town Canoe factory store in Old Town. You might just paddle home with a boatload of bargains.
