Frozen in Ice

On the night of December 22, 1850, when a small schooner was crushed against the ledges near Owl’s Head Light with one mate, his bride-to-be, and a deckhand aboard. Unable to reach the shore, the two lovers wrapped themselves in their blankets, clinging to each other for warmth. But in the bitter cold, spray turned to ice as it crashed over the craft. Soon the lovers were encased in an icy shroud.

At daybreak, the lighthouse keeper spotted the deckhand and sent a rescue party. They found him dazed and desperately cold but alive. They found the couple frozen in each other’s arms in an icy cocoon. Rescuers cut the two bodies out of the ice and managed to thaw them out. After a few hours, they regained consciousness. They went on to marry and had four children.
