Turtle-shaped Seguin Island, the site of Maine’s first offshore station, is one of the foggiest places in the US, socked in for as much as one-third of every year. To relieve his wife’s boredom in this bleak locale, one keeper bought her a player piano. Unfortunately, it had just one tune, and she played it over and over again. This drove the keeper mad. He strangled his wife and took an ax to the piano.
According to some accounts, he subsequently committed suicide. Later keepers reported hearing a phantom piano in the lighthouse, and some people say that the old ditty can still be heard drifting down the Kennebec River on foggy nights.
