Things To Do
Some come for the natural beauty. Some come for the history. Some come for the low-key excitement of Maine’s vibrant summer towns. But no matter what draws you to Acadia, you’ll be planning your next visit before you leave.
As the oldest national park east of the Mississippi, and the only national park in New England, Acadia offers the unmatched access to some of the world’s most beautiful natural landscapes. Hikers of all abilities find miles of well-maintained trails, offering hours of solitude and satisfaction.
Challenging trails like the Beehive and Precipice provide breathtaking views – and ascents that keep climbers on their toes. The carriage paths and countless lowland trails traverse the widest possible variety of ecosystems, ranging from sheltered forests and open meadows to vibrant marshlands and intertidal zones. No matter where you wander, opportunities for birdwatchers, rock-hounds and botanists abound.
Bicycling enthusiasts return year after year to explore the Park’s fifty-plus miles of well-maintained carriage trails. And for those who forget to pack their bikes, high-quality rentals are readily available in Bar Harbor for modest fees.
Within the Park, campers stay close to nature at Blackwoods and Seawall campgrounds, both of which provide easy access to the shore – steps away from cool evergreen forests. For the truly adventurous, the parks are available year-round to provide the perfect starting point for mile upon mile of cross-country skiing and snowshoeing.
For a different perspective on the park, swimming, boating and kayaking are the perfect diversion. From fishing and sightseeing with one of the area’s well-equipped guides to a multi-day kayaking trip – or even a lazy windjammer sail – the Park looks just as beautiful from the water as it does from land.
After satisfying their appetite for nature’s endless offerings, visitors fall in love with the Island’s bustling towns. Bar Harbor, Northeast Harbor and Southwest Harbor are all home to fine dining, comfortable lodging, galleries and boutiques. Nothing beats a morning cup of hot coffee at a sidewalk café, or a relaxing meal of local seafood as the sun drops below the horizon.
