Northeast of Acadia National Park, this 14,000-acre public land encompasses a large portion of the Black, Caribou, and Schoodic Mountains, featuring forests of oak and spruce and several large bodies of water. Enormous granite boulders dot the landscape, the muted colors of their lichen and moss attracting hikers to rest awhile in their shade and watch for wildlife.

Fishing and boating are popular, with both hand-carry and trailered-boat launches available. Canoeing is a favorite among families who return to Donnell Pond Public Reserved Land year after year. Swimming is permitted, and some picnic facilities are available. At day’s end, a variety of typical Maine camping spots await. Sites are maintained at Donnell Pond, Schoodic Bay, and Tunk Lake, a six-milelong body that is one of the deepest in Maine.
