Duck Lake Public Reserved Land

Isolated open spaces are just what you need when searching for Maine ATV trails, and Duck Lake Public Reserved Land offers plenty of room for exploring. Located northeast of Bangor in Maine’s Down East region, this public land reached by unmarked roads covers more than 25,000 acres of forest interrupted by numerous lakes, meandering creeks, and the wetlands common in this part of the state. In the middle of the region, Duck Mountain rises almost 1,200 feet above sea level.

Drawn to the water, anglers head to Duck Lake, Gassabias Lake, and the Unknown Lakes for some of the state’s best fishing. On the stretch of land separating Middle and Lower Unknown Lakes, the Maine Forest Service maintains a camping and swimming area that is highly recommended by frequent visitors to Duck Lake Public Reserved Land. Duck Lake itself offers shore-side camping and canoe launching, as well.

As at other public reserved lands, hunting and trapping are permitted, with certain restrictions, and the area is open year round. Visitors riding ATVs switch to snowmobiles come winter, while those attracted to the summer’s water activities can swap their canoes and fishing rods for cross-country skis and snowshoes. Whatever the season and whatever the sport, though, a great wildlife-viewing opportunity could be just around the next corner.
