Holeb Public Reserved Land

Known for fantastic moose sightings, it’s no surprise Maine’s Kennebec and Moose River Valley is a popular area for moose hunting. And Holeb Public Reserved Land north of Freeport provides a 20,000-acre wilderness in which hunting and trapping are allowed (with restrictions, of course).

Hunting isn’t the only moose-themed activity at this public reserved land, however. Moose River itself has long been the scene of an exciting three-day canoe adventure known as the “Moose River Bow Trip.” This water journey includes class I and II rapids—and a glorious waterfall!

Boating and fishing are also especially popular with visitors to Holeb Public Reserved Land. A trailered boat launch is available. Attean Pond features day-use areas, mostly accessible by boat, with picnic tables. Many visitors to this public land also enjoy the opportunity to swim and camp against the stunning backdrop of Attean and Sally Mountains.

Hiking trails meander through the area, although trekkers should note that trails on Sally and Burnt Jackson Mountains continue off the public reserved land onto private property (where they are not maintained by Maine’s Bureau of Parks & Lands). And when you head out, don’t forget the camera! With moose, loons, and more than 200 other animal species in the area, wildlife watchers and nature photographers are kept busy while exploring this beautiful and diverse region known as “The Switzerland of Maine!”
