Little Moose Public Reserved Land

Also known as Little Squaw Public Reserved Land, these 15,000 acres of wilderness in the Kennebec and Moose River Valleys Region feature plenty of water for a great Maine canoeing adventure, plus a number of hiking trails and other opportunities for outdoor fun. Situated adjacent to the southwest corner of Moosehead Lake, Little Moose Public Reserved Land includes Trout Pond, Big Indian Pond, Little Notch Pond, Big and Little Squaw Ponds, Papoose Pond, and Shadow Pond—remotely situated in the rocky foothills of the Little Moose Mountain Range. Visitors greatly enjoy the excellent fishing, boating, swimming, and, of course, canoeing. And when you’ve worked up an appetite, picnic tables welcome you to break out your store of goodies.

Big and Little Squaw Mountains and Trout Pond Mountain offer plenty of trails for those interested in exploring on foot. The three-mile trail up Big Squaw Mountain ascends about 2,000 feet to an old fire tower. Panoramic views of the surrounding landscape await those who reach the summit.

The southeastern corner of Little Moose Public Reserved Land features a more gently undulating landscape, attracting those who prefer to explore at a faster pace than by hiking (or snowshoeing). ATV riding and off-road biking are popular, as are cross-country skiing and snowmobiling.
