Richardson Public Reserved Land

Scenic Maine ATV trails attract riding enthusiasts to the mountainous Richardson Public Reserved Land, one of the state’s several public lands that allow all-terrain vehicles to share the wilderness with other outdoor enthusiasts. Richardson is situated in western Maine between Upper Richardson Lake and Mooselookmeguntic Lake. Regional businesses that rent ATVs can provide riders with the latest trail maps and helpful information.

The public land’s two large lakes, as well as its handful of smaller ponds, attract visitors who enjoy water sports and activities, too. Boat launches make getting into the water a little easier, and tables make picnicking afterwards a comfortable affair. The Richardson and Mooselookmeguntic Lakes are actually part of the Northern Forest Canoe Trail, the historic 740-mile water trail that traverses New York, Vermont, Quebec, New Hampshire, and Maine.

All camping at Richardson Public Reserved Land is restricted to those Richardson Lake campsites run by a private company. In addition to ATV riding and water-related activities in the warmer months, visitors enjoy cross-country skiing, snowmobiling, and snowshoeing once autumn’s spectacular colors fade and winter’s cold sets in. Wildlife watching is a year-round activity here, though. So you never know which “local resident” you’ll meet around the next bend in the trail!
