Telos Public Reserved Land

If you’re an avid canoeist, you’ve no doubt heard of Telos Public Reserved Land. Within the boundaries of this 23,000-acre wilderness area are Telos Lake and the southern tip of Chamberlain Lake – the most popular starting point for those heading out on the 92-mile Allagash Wilderness Waterway. Canoe campers can even spend a night under the stars before setting out: Coffeelos Pond inside the public reserved land has waterfront campsites; Telos Lake also sports half a dozen sites with picnic tables (as well as a hand-carry boat launch).

Those in search of a fantastic Maine canoeing experience aren’t the only frequent visitors to Telos Public Reserved Land. Coffeelos Pond is a popular fishing spot. Almost 200 acres in size and 24 feet at its deepest, the pond is known for its squaretail brook trout and minnow populations. Six miles long and up to a mile wide, Telos Lake offers the deep water ideal for coldwater game fish. Meanwhile, balmy afternoons find numerous picnickers enjoying this public reserved land’s peaceful beauty and wildlife-watching possibilities (including moose!).

Accessible via private roads northwest of Baxter State Park and open year-round, Telos Public Reserved Land is managed by the North Maine Woods. The organization collects day-use and camping fees to defray the costs of sustainable management of the reserved land. In winter, paddlers and anglers give way to cross-country skiers, snowmobilers, and hunters.
