Aroostook State Park

The distinction of being Maine’s first state park belongs to Aroostook State Park on Presque Isle, home of Echo Lake and Quaggy Joe Mountain. The twin-peaked Quaggy Jo Mountain invites visitors to hike its underlying limestone formations that suggest the presence of an ancient sea. For anglers, Echo Lake fishing offers a bounty of stocked Brook Trout. With the day’s catch in hand, a lakeside picnic area baits you with barbecue grills and tables to linger a little longer.

Since the Aroostook campsites are open year-round, Echo Lake welcomes hearty visitors to its shores whether you prefer a winter wonderland or summer sizzle. While the spring thaw ushers in a new season for marveling at the park’s natural areas and wildlife through the eyes of the nature hiker, the summer heat draws out the boaters, the campers, and the fishermen.

Unlike the Allagash Wilderness Waterway, which offers no groomed trails, Aroostook charms winter sports enthusiasts with groomed cross-country ski trails and snowmobile trails that cross through the park.

Pick the time of year that suits you best, then pack accordingly… a drill to cut through the ice or sunscreen to slather on while kayaking. And remember, if you think you hear an echo while fishing in Echo Lake, it’s probably a Brook Trout welcoming you to the best fishing hole around.
