Birch Point State Park

As often happens when traveling, getting there can be half the adventure! And reaching the secluded shore of Birch Point State Park is no exception, considering that first-timers usually need a compass to find their way on the small peninsula along the Mussel Ridge Channel where the park is located. Once you arrive, let your eyes take in the splendor of one of the most exquisite bodies of water on the eastern seaboard. A multitude of islands shimmer in Penobscot Bay, some of which play host to popular summer colonies. From the quiet, crescent-shaped beach, you can enjoy the picturesque scene while picnicking, fishing, or just playing in the gentle surf that laps upon the sand.

In addition to the many islands, Penobscot Bay is home to at least a dozen historic lighthouses and an array of peaceful little harbors filled with lobster boats—presenting visitors to Birch Point State Park with a view that is truly a model of authentic Maine!

A day-use-only area open during the summer months, the park’s remoteness may mean you’ll see fewer human visitors than at other beaches—but you certainly won’t be alone. Ospreys and bald eagles call the park and bay home. Listen, too, for the friendly bark of harbor seals. And, as is the case anywhere in Maine, you may be fortunate enough to spot a family of deer, or even a moose!
