Cobscook Bay State Park

If Maine camping is your goal, Cobscook Bay State Park should be your destination. Surrounded on three sides by ocean, the park provides numerous remote campsites along the water’s edge. The oceanfront, comprised of Cobscook Bay and Whiting Bay, gives a feeling of island camping to the park, even though you never actually leave the mainland.

Most of the pristine, waterfront campsites are reserved for tent-bound campers. Cobscook Point, Broad Cove, and the Harbor Point area all offer remarkable camping experiences. The beautiful tent-only spots allow Maine campers to observe the dramatic swing in the area tides. Come witness first-hand the extreme ocean movement at this point along the Maine coast. No wonder the native Indians named the area Cobscook, which means “boiling tides.”

Low tide serves up an enchanting invitation to venture out onto the mud flats for some famous Maine clamming, which is perfectly legal. And besides the fabulous waterfront locations, Cobscook Bay State Park has other fun camping areas. The park offers visitors a rare opportunity to traverse the coastline from Cobscook Bay to Passamaquody Bay to the Atlantic Ocean. Awesome!

The camping season is from 15 May to 15 October, and leashed pets are welcome. So pack your gear for a Maine camping trip, and remember to toss in a bucket and a fork. A clam bake is waiting.
