Scarborough Beach State Park

Scarborough Beach State Park offers one of the best ocean swimming beaches in the state of Maine. Water temperatures remain fairly warm throughout the summer months making this state park a very popular spot for locals and visitors alike. Lifeguards are on-duty between June 10th and Labor Day and it is recommended that when swimming, you stay within the manned area; rip currents can be problematic here.

Parking is tight at Scarborough Beach State Park and spots tend to fill early—especially on the weekends. With water temps in the upper 60s, those avid about swimming arrive early and often. In addition to swimmers, you will often find surfers and beachcombers on the shoreline.

Scarborough Beach State Park also offers a self-guided trail, fishing, and motorized boating opportunities in the warm weather months. Park amenities include the “Shack,” a local favorite with a variety of food options, daily rentals of chairs, umbrellas, and boogie boards (for those who like swimming and boarding), and showers to rinse away the day’s sand.

Located in Southern Maine, Scarborough Beach State Park is a short drive from Portland, Kittery, and Kennebunk. Please be advised that no pets are allowed on the beach between April 1st and October 1st and a permit is required to surf or use a metal detector at Scarborough Beach State Park.
