Wolfe's Neck Woods State Park

Donated by a Freeport couple back in 1969, the 230-plus acres that comprise Wolfe’s Neck Woods State Park offer a pleasant escape from the bustle of nearby shopping. The peninsula of Wolf Neck is bounded by the rocky shores of Casco Bay and the Harraseeket River. If clamming, kayaking or a Maine boating experience is on your list, but you don’t want to travel too far off the beaten path, then Wolfe’s Neck Woods State Park is your place.

About five miles of paths, including one 1.6-mile loop trail, wind through the park’s hemlock and white pine forest and to the sea. The park’s lands are almost entirely flat, ideal for physically challenged visitors and small children (and for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing in winter).

Follow the Casco Bay Trail along the coast to see Googins Island, an osprey sanctuary. If you packed your binoculars, you just might witness these elegant birds with their babies in the spring, or gathering for their migration to South America come fall. A salt marsh estuary within the park adds to the opportunities for bird watching.

Pick up picnic goodies in Freeport and enjoy a meal under the oaks that shade the picnic area, which includes barbeques and a picnic shelter. Rangers at Wolfe’s Neck Woods State Park offer one-hour guided nature programs—especially instructive and fun for visitors getting their introduction to Maine’s gorgeous and varied state parks.
