One thing you can count on during the winter months in Maine is plenty of snow. Frequent storms track across Maine and blanket the state from Kittery to Fort Kent and everywhere in-between. The average annual snowfall of more than 200 inches ensures a deep snow pack all winter long and plenty of opportunities for outdoor recreation and exploration.
Skiing & Riding
Enjoy great skiing and snowboarding at Maine’s 18 alpine ski areas and resorts. From challenging steeps and bumps and tree-studded glades to tricked-out terrain parks; from wide open blue intermediate cruiser trails to gentle novice slopes, Maine has a wealth of terrain to interest skiers and riders of all abilities. Advanced snowmaking and grooming techniques ensure a high quality ski experience. Find world class skiing at the big mountain, full service destination resorts; enjoy the slower pace of the family-oriented mid-sized mountains, or try one of the quaint community areas for a fun diversion.
Cross-Country Skiing
Maine offers 550 kilometers of cross country ski trails at our 23 Nordic ski centers that’ll take you out into the quiet winter woods, across open fields, along gurgling streams, and through the scenic hills and mountains. Lace up your boots, click into your skis and glide away down the groomed track on your classic or skate skis for a few hours or an entire day. Or take to the backcountry and ski into a remote hut or traditional sporting camp complete with cozy accommodations and hearty meals.
Snowmobiling
Snowmobiling is one Maine’s most popular winter activities and a fun way to cover lots of ground and enjoy scenes of forested mountainsides and frozen lakes and ponds. More than 14,500 miles of interconnected, marked and groomed snowmobile trails are maintained by local clubs and organizations, ensuring plenty of terrain to explore. Many towns are snowmobile hubs, providing a full range of services for snowsled riders and hosting winter festivals and events, including the Snodeo in the Rangeley Lakes region, the International Snowmobilers Festival in Madaswaska, and the Polar Blast Festival in Eustis.

Warm up from the winter chill and add variety to your visit with indoor entertainment at Maine’s many museums and cultural centers, performing arts centers, professional sports venues.
