Snowshoeing
Snowshoeing has long been a favorite winter activity in Maine. It’s an easy and inexpensive way to travel quietly in the great outdoors and get some healthy exercise. Snowshoe trails are found throughout Maine at Nordic ski centers, alpine ski areas, state parks and public reserved lands, Acadia National Park, land trust properties and many other public and private preserves.
Time may have transformed the venerable snowshoe from traditional wooden models to high-tech plastic and metal frame affairs, but the simple mechanics of snowshoeing have remained the same: Just strap them on to your winter boots and start walking – it’s that easy to enjoy a beautiful day in Maine's winter woods, and a fun sport the whole family can enjoy together.
As you snowshoe along look for tracks of the bountiful wildlife that inhabits the Maine woods, like rabbits, fox and deer. Listen among the trees for the chirping of hardy year-round resident birds like chickadees, jays and juncos.
Snowshoe rentals, lessons and guided hikes are available at most Nordic ski centers and alpine ski areas and through many outfitters and outdoor retailers. If you’re new to the sport of snowshoeing, this is a great way to get oriented for an enjoyable trek on the snowy paths of Maine’s forests and fields.
