Designer outlets in Freeport, Kittery and Ellsworth, combined with the boutiques and specialty stores of Bangor and Portland’s Old Port, have created a growing interest in Maine as an international shopping mecca. No matter where you travel in the state, you’ll find antique shops in abundance. Shaker furniture and maritime antiques are of especially good quality. On a more contemporary note, there are many fine galleries, as well as artist’s communities located along the coast. Local handicrafts are also readily available. And if it’s true variety you’re after, you can always retreat to the great American mall.
