Mountains to the Maine Coast Itinerary

Day One

Portland, Maine is the state’s largest city and the beginning of your tour. Embark upon a tour that continues to the Maine Wildlife Park where you can see native wildlife in its natural surroundings. Moose, bear, deer, mountain lions, lynx and many other animals can be seen during a leisurely stroll around the park. The Poland Spring Preservation Park is about five minutes up the road, offering tours of the three-story State of Maine Building and the Poland Spring Museum with fascinating science displays and bottling memorabilia from the popular bottled water producer. Enjoy lunch in their café. The village of Bethel and the Bethel Historical Society is your next stop. Stroll along the village green and tour the two historic homes with their twelve period rooms and exhibition gallery along with craft demonstrations. En Route to Rangeley, you’ll drive along the Rangeley Lakes National Scenic Byway and enjoy the fantastic vistas of Maine’s mountains, lakes and streams along the way. An evening Moose Safari could get you a glimpse of these lanky creatures. Dinner and overnight in Rangeley.

Day Two

For those who want a soft adventure experience, a sunrise canoe trip gets you off to a great start. Others might decide to try their luck at panning for gold in a mountain stream. In the morning, travel to Norlands Living History Center in Livermore for their Laugh & Learn program that is perfect for groups. Norlands was home to the Washburn Family, one of Maine’s great political dynasties and offers tours of several 19th Century buildings. Lunch is included in this experience. Ricker Hill Orchard is just down the road from Norlands, and is a good place to pick up some Maine made products. Continue to Maine’s capital city of Augusta for Dinner and overnight.

Day Three

Following a leisurely breakfast, learn about Maine’s manufacturing and natural history at the Maine State Museum. This three-story museum houses everything from train cars to wildlife dioramas. Old Fort Western is America’s oldest surviving wooden fort and it sits along the East bank for the historic Kennebec River. Choose from several group programs that bring the history of the fort and the region to life. A trip to Maine would not be complete without at least one stop along the beautiful coast. Travel to Boothbay Harbor where you will have the afternoon free to browse the shops and enjoy this bustling coastal village. Take in a dinner show at the Carousel Music Theatre, then return to your room overlooking the harbor.

Day Four

Wake to the smell of the fresh sea air and put on your sea legs for a scenic harbor cruise during which you’ll see fishermen working and lighthouses guarding the coast. On your final day, visit another Maine landmark, Freeport, home to L.L. Bean and more than 100 outlet shops.
