Rangeley Lakes Itinerary
Day One
After breakfast, start your day with a moderate hike up Bald Mountain (2–3 hours) for one of Maine’s most spectacular views: a 360 degree panorama of all of the Rangeley Lakes, some of Maine’s highest peaks, as well as New Hampshire’s White Mountains to the southwest. Enjoy lunch just down the road in the nearby town of Oquossoc. Then drive three miles for a tour of the Wilhelm Reich Museum (listed on the National Register of Historic Places), the home and research center of physician/scientist Wilhelm Reich, set on 175 beautiful acres of rolling fields and forests. Another three miles brings you to the village of Rangeley on the shores of Rangeley Lake, where you can browse its numerous shops, galleries, and bookstores. Dinner will be an old-fashioned lobster bake at the historic Bald Mountain Camps—truly a step back to an earlier era—on the shores of Mooselookmeguntic Lake, the largest of the Rangeley Lakes chain. The camps face west, providing breathtaking sunsets over the lake’s unspoiled western shores, and unsurpassed stargazing above the lake after dark.
Day Two
Day begins with a licensed Maine guide preparing a light breakfast for you on the banks of the Kennebago River , before leading you on a guided canoe trip upriver for moose-watching and other wildlife viewing: deer, beaver, birds, and much more. Then your guide will escort you down to the mouth of the river at Cupsuptic Lake (another in the Rangeley Lake chain), at a beautiful spot known as Indian Rock which figures prominently in local Native American lore and logging history. Have brunch at the Rangeley Inn, a town mainstay since the 19th century, then further explore the region’s heritage with tours of the Rangeley Lakes Region Historical Society and the Rangeley Lakes Region Logging Museum. Spend the rest of the day leisurely lunching and exploring the downtown, before heading off for a sunset cruise on Rangeley Lake.
Day Three
Your final day here begins with a visit to the unique Log Church in Oquossoc, listed in the National Register of Historic Places. Then spend the morning on a leisurely hike along Cascade Stream, which features some startling geological formations. After lunch at one of Rangeley’s many restaurants, head over to the Rangeley Public Library (also listed on the National Register of Historic Places) for a lecture on Rangeley Writers and Artists. At mid-afternoon, you’ll depart from Rangeley. If you’re heading down Route 4, stop for a few minutes at Smalls Falls State Park. If you’re driving down Route 17, pull over at the Height of Land overlook, for an astounding final view of Mooselookmeguntic Lake (a vista second only to the top of Bald Mountain).
